Today the Nature Conservancy Came to Lakewood School

Today the Nature Conservancy came to our school to teach us about the Manitoba prairie and the animals and insects that live there. Here are some of the things that we learned.

A bird's bones are hollow, which helps it to fly. (Ashton)
A beaver's teeth are orange. This orange color helps to make their teeth strong. (Miguel)
Beavers use their tails as dinner plates and their tails help them to swim. (Lincoln)
I learned the life cycle of the butterfly. (Kaitlyn)
I learned that after the female butterfly lays its eggs, it dies. (Kyra)
Monarch butterflies eat milkweed, and other animals know not to eat the monarch because monarch butterflies and their caterpillars are poisonous. (Autumn)
Butterflies can live up to 8 months. (Alec)

After the presentation, students had the opportunity to touch some of the animal skins and bones. Thank you, Cathy for coming out to Lakewood School to teach the grade 2/3 students about animals and insects on the Manitoba prairies. It was a wonderful presentation!

The Nature Conservancy Comes to Lakewood School

Tomorrow the Nature Conservatory of Canada is coming to Lakewood School to do a presentation on the monarch butterfly. We will be learning about this incredible butterfly. During the presentation, we will learn about the challenges it is facing and what initiatives are in place to help protect it. Check back to read about what we learned!

Day 7 Our Questions About Frogs

Our tadpoles are starting to swim and they are coming to the surface to breathe air. They are more active. We estimate there are between 100 - 250 tadpoles. We continue to ask questions about frogs. These are some of our wonderings:

How many types of frogs are there in the world? (Kaley/Lincoln)
How high do frogs jump? (Alec)
How far can their tongues reach? (Stanley)
How long can frogs live? (Jamilah)
What is the biggest frog in the world? (Luca)
How many eggs do they lay? (Kyra)
Why do their mouths expand? (Maya)
How many frogs live in Canada? (Miguel)
How many types of extinct frogs are there? (Kaitlyn)
Which frog jumps the farthest? (Taylor)
Why is their tongues attached to their lips? (Autumn)
How many different types of frogs are there in Manitoba? (Hunter)
What other cities are frogs in? (Ashton)
How many poisonous frogs are there in the world? (Timmy)
Are there any poisonous frogs in Canada/Manitoba? (Alec/Stanley)
How many eggs do wood frogs lay? (Miguel)

To find out the answers to our questions, we will research, using the internet, books, and by asking Doug Collicutt, a biologist. (He gave us the frog eggs) If you know any answers to our questions, please leave a comment.

                                                                              Day 6

Day 2 Our Frogs are Hatching

Our new frog eggs are starting to hatch. We observed they are starting to wiggle and squiggle out of their eggs. So far we have learned that once they come out of the eggs they don't really swim around. We will not have to feed the new tadpoles for the first 3-5 days because they eat the egg yolk.  After the first five days, we will be feeding them boiled lettuce and fish flakes. As they get older, they become ravenous.
