Life in Room 11!

We have been working hard at getting to know each other and settling into a new year of learning and growing! Here are a few of the things we have been working on in our class.

In Social Studies, we have been getting to know each other.  We have discussed our roles in the classroom (My Job/Your Job) and what the classroom atmosphere should 'Look Like', 'Sound Like' and 'Feel Like'. We have discussed responsible behavior in the classroom and on the playground, and we have discussed 'Above the Line' behaviors.  We will continue to discuss the 'Ideal Classroom' and we will discuss rules in our classroom and why we have rules.  Our rules for the classroom will be based on our beliefs of what our classroom should look, sound and feel like.  In October, we will beginning mapping skills.  Students will look at various kinds of maps and they will learn how to read a map.  They will be studying the location of the continents and the oceans.

In Mathematics, we worked on the mental math strategies of 'Doubles' and 'Combinations that make 10 and 100'.  We are practicing using efficient strategies to determine facts to 18, as students work towards the automatic recall of facts.  Students have been generating questions to learn more about each other.  They have conducted surveys, collected the data, and discussed what they have learned from the information collected.  Going forward, we will be looking at various ways to display data, using concrete graphs, line plots, bar graphs, and pictographs, and we will practice comparing the data by making statements and by answering questions about the data collected.  In October, students will be looking at various ways to represent a number, such as using coins, number sentences, base 10 materials, and story problems.

This term in Science, we are learning about materials and structures.  We have brainstormed types of materials for building, and we have predicted the strength of various types of paper.  In October, we will explore ways to strengthen a material for building, and we will explore ways to join two materials for a specific use.  Students will be looking at various natural and human-built structures, and they will identify shapes that help provide stability and strength.

In Language Arts, we are working on learning the routines for 'Read to Self', 'Read to Someone' and 'Work on Writing'. During our 'Read to Self' routines, students have been working on increasing their stamina for reading. We have discussed what it looks and sounds like during this time.  The Home Reading program is up and running.  Thank you for support of this program!  Spelling is underway as well.  Spelling words come home at the beginning of the week, and on Friday our spelling marks are recorded in our agendas.  We have started 'Buddy Reading' with the students in Room 22!  Students will begin learning and practicing 'Work on Writing' routines, and they will be discussing various ideas for writing. We will look at 'hooking' the reader, at developing our writing to include details, and at having a satisying conclusion to our writing.  'Me Bags' went home on Friday, and the students are excited about getting to know more about each other.  This activity will be a great way to practice speaking and listening skills.

During Art activities, students are focusing on the element of line.  We have discussed horizonal, vertical, diagonal lines, and we have practiced making thin, thick, and broken lines.  Our next Art lessons will look at other types of line, including curved, spiral, zig zag, and hatching.  We will learn that by varying the types of line, we can create more interesting pictures.  Students will be examining various famous works of art, and they will discuss how the artist uses line to convey movement and mood.

In French, students will be practicing greetings through various oral language routines.  This term, students will be learning the color names, to count to 30 in French, the alphabet, the days of the week, as well as, the vocabulary for school supplies.
